In Finnish we divide our world into outside and inside locations. There are three each one of them. The inside ones are called in our book S-locations and outside locations L-locations. (See pages 154-156)
We are not yet diving in to the deep end to learn how to use either one of the locations but how to form them – to see what are the “endings” of these locations.
Inside – Sisällä, begins in Finnish with a letter S. I hope this would help you to remember why it is S-location. (In grammar language those locations are called Inessiivi, Elatiivi and Illatiivi.)
S-locations inside/ from inside/ to inside
– ssa/ ssä = in remember to apply k-p-t-rule
– sta/ stä = from remember to apply k-p-t-rule
– vvn = into NOTE: no k-p-t rule (you’ll make this vv-structure with vowels. talo-taloon, auto-autoon, Amerikka-amerikkaan, koti-kotiin)
Outside – Ulkona in Finnish has no letter S, but ULKONA, one letter L. I hope this will remind you to use L-location. (In grammar language those locations are Adessiivi, Ablatiivi, Allatiivi)
L/locations at, on, by / OR to OR from a location that was “on” or “at”.
– lla/ llä = at, on , by remember to apply k-p-t-rule
– lle = to remember apply k-p-t-rule
– lta/ ltä = from on or at
Remember: only one of each inside and outside locations is expressing stillness: Autossa, Autolla. The other 4 are movements: Autosta, Autoon and Autolta, Autolle.
